Anyone with digital satelite TV in the UK will doubtless have seen many documentaries - or at least the titles of them on the EPG - about Nazis. They're the most popular subject for documentaries for some reason. When there's nothing on we sometimes get stuck watching one whilst channel hopping, and occasionally they're quite interesting.
One the other day followed Hitler from soldier in World War One through to being the Fuhrer. What I didn't know was that Hitler was sent into the German Workers Party to infiltrate them by the Bavarian Reichswehr in 1919. He wanted to set up his own political party, but his superiors made him join the existing nationalist party. Hitler took control and changed its name to the National Socialist German Workers Party, better known as the Nazis, in 1920; his quick rise to power undoubtedly down to his reported charisma.
Last week, right-wing xenophobe Robert Kilroy-Silk (MEP) publicly stated that he should be the leader of the UK Independence Party. Like Hitler, he's only been a member of his party for a short period, and like Hitler he's reportedly charismatic. (I've always found him an arrogant cock, myself.) Is he trying to emulate Hitler? I'll let you make up your own minds. Here's some bullet points, and I apologise in advance for putting Hitler in the present tense...
Both blame outside/foreign forces for the state of the country in which they live. Both are hypocrites. Hitler wasn't particularly Aryan, was he? And Kilroy hates the European Union so much that having to draw that huge MEP wage and guaranteed pension must be incredibly traumatic. Both have dodgy hair. Both like the sound of their own voices. Both have ideas above their station.Links
